3-D Secure (3DS)

 

eCommerce authentication protocol enabling verification of cardholder identity. Can be used for payments to reduce fraud and, in some cases, shift liability for some types of chargebacks away from the merchant.

 

3DS Requestor Initiated (3RI)

 

Merchant-initiated 3DS authentication without direct cardholder involvement at time of transaction. Enables 3DS for recurring payments, non-payment authentication to verify customer payment methods, or even triggering decoupled authentication with the cardholder via a banking app or mobile text.

Acquirer

 

The acquirer, sometimes known as the payment processor, is responsible for facilitating the merchant’s ability to accept the credit card payment. Moneris is an example of an acquirer. The acquirer asks the customer’s credit card company, Mastercard, for example, to submit and receive authorization from the customer’s issuer that the customer has the required funds available to make the purchase.

Application Programming Interface (API)

 

A set of routines, protocols and tools for communication between software. The interface is a contract between applications

 

API Token or Key

 

A string of alphanumeric characters used to validate the identity of a client to with a server. The Moneris API can use an API key for authentication.

 

Address Verification Service (AVS)

 

Fraud prevention system that matches the billing address of a transaction against the address associated with a cardholder's account on file with their issuing bank. Successful AVS results limit fraud and can

Credit Card

 

A card indicating that the holder has been granted a line of credit. It enables the holder to make purchases and/or withdraw cash up to a prearranged ceiling; the credit granted can be settled in full by the end of a specified period or can be settled in part; with the balance taken as extended credit. Interest is charged on the amount of any extended credit and the holder is sometimes charged an annual fee.

 

Card Verification Digits (CVD)

 

Fraud prevention tool utilizing the 3 digits apeparing on the back of a credit card. This data is submitted to the issuing bank to check for a match. CVD verification adds security to prevent fraud but does not affect the success of the transaction.

Debit Card

 

Card enabling the holder to have his purchases directly charged to funds on his account at a deposit-taking institution.

 

Digital Wallet

 

Software application used for electronic payments that encrypts the underlying card data for additional security. Offers customers more seamless payment experience via browser or mobile devices. See Apple Pay & Google Pay.

Electronic Commerce Indicator (ECI)

 

Indicates whether the transaction was Ecommerce or Mail / Telephone Order For Ecommerce transactions, it indicates the level of security used when the Cardholder provided payment information to the Merchant. The ECI may originate from a digital wallet or be provided from 3DS Authentication.

Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV)

 

Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) are the three companies that originally created the standard. The standard is now managed by EMVCo, a consortium with control split equally among Visa, MasterCard, JCB, American Express, China UnionPay and Discover. EMV is a technical standard for smart payment cards and payment teminals. EMV cards are smart cards which store their data on integrated circuits rather than magnetic stripes, although many EMV cards also have stripes for backward compatibility. They can be contact cards that must be physically insterted into a ready or contactless cards that can be read over a short distance using radio-frequency identification (RFID or near field communication (NFC).

Host

 

A network node that participates in application-level functions. A host is often acting as a server for other devices on the network. Moneris frequently refers to its authorization switch as the host.

Hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP)

 

Open-internet protocol to transfer or convey information on the World Wide Web.

Issuer

 

The issuer is the financial institution that issued the card to the customer. The issuer either authorizes or declines the transaction and sends confirmation of its decision back to the merchant electronically via the acquirer.

Data structure format that is easily human-readable and usable by any programming language. The New Moneris API uses JSON for the request and response payloads.

A payment card that is loaded with money by you or someone else. Looks just like any normal credit or debit card, with a card number, signature strip and company branding.

Schema

 

A structure in JSON format indicating what fields are present for a resource and its endpoints. Some Moneris API endpoints may include multiple schema with different requirements to suit alternate use-cases.

 

Settlement

 

The process whereby Moneris takes completed payments for reconciliation with card brands and issuers before transferring funds to the merchant's bank account.

 

Store ID

 

Unique identifier for a merchant account within the Moneris Gateway system. 10 digit alphanumeric string.
